The church has not been immune to this drift in culture. One subtle way we have absorbed the culture’s assumptions is through personal subjectivism—the idea that personal experience is the ultimate authority.
Consider a well-meaning approach to evangelism built entirely on personal testimony: “No one can argue with your testimony!” But if a neighbor responds to your story of how Jesus changed your life by saying, “I’m so glad Jesus has made your life better—here’s a mindfulness app that’s given me peace,” what do you say next?
We are not here merely to share what Jesus means to us. We are here to declare a public truth with ramifications for all of life: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. That is a historical claim, not a personal preference.
