What Should We Do?

 

We are here to represent God in this moment. Paul describes our role clearly:

2 Corinthians 5:20 (ESV)  Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

1. Live Normal, Holy Lives

1 Peter 2:11–12 (ESV)  Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

Unlike Buddhism, Hinduism, or the popular spiritual self-helpism of our age, Christianity is not escapist. At the center of our faith is Jesus Christ, the God who put on skin and “moved into the neighborhood” (John 1:14). He did not retreat from the world; He entered it. And He left us with instructions: love one another (John 13:34), make disciples (Matthew 28:18–20), be good citizens (1 Peter 2:13–15), and wait expectantly for His return (Romans 8:22–24).

2. Proclaim the Gospel, Not Moralism

We are not merely calling people to better behavior—we are proclaiming a person. There is a common mistake that reduces Christianity to a collection of ethical teachings. One Hollywood figure put it this way:

“I read about Buddhism, I read about Islam, I read about Christianity. I came away looking at what Jesus taught—‘love thy neighbor’ and ‘do unto others.’ That resonated with me more than anything else I read. All religions basically talk about loving your fellow man and peace.”  — Hollywood producer (unnamed)

This sounds reasonable, but it misses the entire point. Christianity is not primarily about the teachings of Jesus—it is about Jesus Himself. Paul is clear about what is of “first importance”:

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (ESV)  For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

His death and resurrection are not one more lesson in a list of world religions. They are a historical event that changes everything. We proclaim Jesus as the center, not just His teaching.

3. Resist the Devil

James 4:6–7 (ESV)  But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Rod Dreher, in Live Not by Lies, warns us:

“Everything about modern society is designed to make memory—historical, social, and cultural—hard to cultivate. Christians must understand this not only to resist soft totalitarianism but also to transmit the faith to the coming generations.”  — Rod Dreher, Live Not by Lies

Resistance begins with memory—remembering who we are, what God has done, and what is truly at stake. In an age designed to make us forget, the church must be the keeper of the story.

 

We are salt. We are light. We are ambassadors.

Let us not lose heart, for our Lord has not abandoned His people.
